For Managers: How to kill your charisma

Charisma is described as a personal quality where a person can inspire devotion and enthusiasm from others. Many people believe it is a gift and they fail to recognise their potential to be charismatic, whilst many managers easily kill the charisma they have. Here are some management behaviours that will most certainly kill your charisma and lose you devotion, enthusiasm and support from your team members…

  • Too busy to have a sense of humour
  • Too busy to make time for small talk
  • Failing to start the day talking your team – heading straight to your computer and your emails
  • Not listening or pretending to listen
  • Dithering! People like positive action
  • Blaming – people lack the confidence to raise issues
  • Feeling sorry for yourself, and worse than that letting others see this
  • Being too busy to keep in touch with your team – cancelling and postponing meetings and one to ones – looks like you are not coping! Or you don’t care

For Trainers: Ideas to get you started

If team engagement is a topic you would like to pursue with your managers and teams you most probably couldn’t find a better starting point than looking at:

Blessing White X Model of Engagement
blessingwhite.com/the-x-model-of-employee-engagement/

There is an abundance of material here to help your managers identify where team members are on the model - are they are engaged, disengaged, honeymooners, hamsters or crash and burners? And then you can facilitate sessions around how to improve team engagement.

Would you like us to help you design or deliver a course?

Training in action: The Team Engagement Course

At Syd Strike Training we weave team engagement into our management and leadership development programmes, and we design bespoke courses for our clients.

We recently delivered a course for an amazing management team at the stunning Clayton Hotel Chiswick, helping managers build on the success identified from staff feedback.

The starting point of the training was the positive affirmation

“We go above and beyond … because we love our jobs and have a feeling of ownership – loving Clayton Hotel Chiswick”

This is team engagement … and the purpose of the course was to encourage and develop more of this by equipping managers with more understanding and skills.

What did managers learn?

The course covered …

  • The principles of staff engagement
  • How to use staff survey findings to improve staff engagement
  • Tools and behaviours that will help improve motivation and staff engagement

What did managers do?

Participating in a facilitation session, managers explored the principles of staff engagement using the Blessing White X model.

Managers identified positive and constructive comments raised in the hotel staff surveys and explored ideas for building on the positive and making improvements where these were required.

They participated in activities to learn how to improve staff engagement with an emphasis on effective listening skills

The course concluded with action plans for their departments with specific targets and dates for achieving them.

All of this with General Manager support and involvement and constant review to keep up the good work.

The enthusiasm is visible.
